The battle for Kira Municipality is not yet over as NRM’s Daniel Kananura now dragged newly elected NUP MP George Musisi to the High Court in Wakiso, challenging the outcome of the January 15, 2026 election.
Kananura has officially filed an election petition, accusing Musisi and the Electoral Commission of presiding over an election that he claims was not free and fair. He is pointing to alleged irregularities including ballot stuffing and voter bribery, and wants court to either nullify the results or order a fresh poll or recount.
Musisi, who contested on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, secured a decisive win in what had been a heated three-way race. He even got a rare public concession from long-serving incumbent Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, who stepped aside after 15 years in Parliament.

Both Musisi and the Electoral Commission have been given just 10 days to file their defense. Failure to do so could see the case proceed and potentially be decided without their input hence raising the stakes even higher.
Kananura, a known NRM mobilizer, appears determined to test the results despite Musisi’s clear margin at the polls, setting up yet another legal showdown in Uganda’s increasingly contested post-election season.
With several election petitions already filed across the country ahead of the May 2026 swearing-in, the courts are once again becoming the new battleground for political offices.
