Former NBS TV news anchor Hatmah Nalugwa Sekaaya is opening up about what life in the media really looks like… and it’s not as glamorous as many think, describing it as fulfilling, but also filled with moments that tested her both emotionally and professionally.

One story that has caught many people’s attention is from her early days before the cars, before the comfort and back then, she used to commute like any other Ugandan, jumping taxis after work until one day at the taxi stage, things got ugly.

As she tried to board, another passenger pushed past her and grabbed a seat. Sekaaya chose to stay calm and let it go… but what followed shocked her and the same woman reportedly started insulting her, even questioning if that’s how she behaves on TV.

For someone viewers see polished and composed on screen, it was a harsh reminder of how differently public figures are treated off camera.

Sekaaya also revealed that pressure inside the newsroom was just as real. Constant comparisons with colleagues often driven by audience opinions would sometimes get to her and shake her confidence after losing a close cousin.

Instead of getting time to properly grieve, she says she was required to report back to work almost immediately at the time, the newsroom was under a strict Kenyan supervisor who didn’t easily entertain personal excuses forcing her to balance deep personal pain with the demands of live television.

And for Hatmah Sekaaya, it was all part of the journey that shaped her into who she is today.
