Ugandan police say they are searching for Mukuye Siraje, a known LGBTQ+ rights advocate, over allegations that he organized a private gathering believed to be a pride event—despite government warnings against such activities.

The event reportedly took place in Kampala, attracting attention from law enforcement who claim it violated recent directives related to gatherings promoting what authorities describe as “acts against cultural norms.” Mukuye is said to have gone into hiding shortly after several individuals were arrested at the venue. Police allege that this isn’t the first such event linked to him.

Authorities have since issued a public appeal for information about Mukuye’s whereabouts. A reward of UGX 2 million has been offered to anyone with credible information leading to his arrest. The public has been urged to contact the nearest police station or call the designated hotlines provided.

Uganda remains one of the African countries with strict anti-homosexuality laws, and in recent months, enforcement has intensified following the signing of new legislation. This has sparked both local and international criticism, especially from human rights organisations.

While Mukuye has not responded publicly to the allegations, members of the LGBTQ+ community say the increased scrutiny has created an atmosphere of fear, with some opting to go underground or flee the country.

Police say investigations are ongoing and have cautioned the public to avoid speculation as they gather more evidence.
