The incumbent president of Tanzania John Pombe Magufuli has been re-elected for the 2nd and final term in the Tanzania General Elections held on 28th October 2020.

Magufuli defeated his closed rival with a range of over 71%. Magufuli had 84% of total of votes cast while Tundu Lissu the leading opposition candidate, who once survived an assassination attempt after being shot multiple times in 2017, managed to get 13%.

Magufuli a man who declared Corona Virus victory in Tanzania was representing the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), a party that has together with its predecessor TANU (Tanganyika African National Congress) ruled Tanzania uninterruptedly since independence while Tundu Lissu an outspoken former MP who was chased from the ruling CCM because of being a critic of Magufuli was representing party for Democracy and Progress known in Swahili the most spoken language in Tanzania as Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (ChaDeMa).

Tundu survived an assassination attempt in September 2017 after being shot several times by assailants that are yet to be identified and was treated in Kenya and Belgium after undergoing up to 20 successful surgeries only to return announcing his presidential bid.

The East African Community observers team commented that the elections were “conducted in a regular manner"

The opposition candidate claims that there was fraud and intimidation in the election process which he says was not following both Tanzania’s and international law though the NEC has already dismissed the claims.
