In a ceremony held at the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development today, the renowned Ugandan musicians, Moses Ssali, famously known as Bebe Cool, and Joseph Mayanja, popularly referred to as Jose Chameleone, have been officially sworn in as members of the Board of Trustees of the Uganda National Cultural Center (UNCC).
The appointment of Bebe Cool and Jose Chameleone, among other cabinet-approved members, marks a significant step in the revitalization of the UNCC following the conclusion of the previous board's term in June last year. The newly appointed members will serve a three-year tenure, bringing a fresh perspective and energy to the esteemed institution.
Joining them on the board are distinguished individuals, including Prof. Okaka Opio as Chairperson, Phina Mugerwa as Vice Chairperson, Lillian Mbabazi, Dr. Richard Komakech, and Juliana Naumo. The composition of the new board, as disclosed by the Ministry, reflects Uganda's rich cultural heritage and demographic diversity, with a notable representation of young people.
Established under the Uganda National Cultural Centre Act of 1959 (amended 1965), the UNCC holds a pivotal role in Uganda's cultural landscape, fostering artistic expression and preserving national heritage. Over the years, the UNCC has been instrumental in nurturing cultural and artistic endeavors while providing a platform for various societies and organizations dedicated to the arts, culture, and entertainment.
At the heart of the UNCC's offerings are the National Theatre and the Nommo Gallery. The National Theatre serves as a versatile venue for stage performances and cinema screenings, catering to diverse artistic expressions. Meanwhile, the Nommo Gallery showcases exhibitions featuring works by both Ugandan and international artists, fostering cultural exchange and appreciation.
Visitors to the UNCC can also indulge in culinary delights at the snack bar, renowned for its authentic African dishes, and explore locally crafted treasures at the Craft Village.
Guiding the UNCC's operations is an eight-member Board of Trustees appointed by the Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development. This board oversees strategic direction and ensures the effective management of the center's affairs, reinforcing its commitment to cultural enrichment and community engagement.
