Concerns over Safety and Rights of LGBTQ+ Activists Grow.

In the wake of Uganda's recently implemented Anti Homosexuality Act, Twaibu Wamala, the executive director of Harm Reduction Network Uganda, has come forward with troubling accounts of surveillance and harassment.

Wamala, a prominent activist supporting gay drug users and providing public health information, believes that these incidents are a direct consequence of his organization's work.

Reports indicate that Wamala has been subjected to persistent surveillance, with unknown individuals tailing him to his residence and even making inquiries at the Harm Reduction Network Uganda's office in Makindye. On some occasions, individuals claiming to be security operatives have sought his whereabouts.

These unnerving encounters have left Wamala feeling increasingly vulnerable and concerned for his personal safety.

In an effort to address the escalating threats, Wamala has taken the matter to the Kawempe Police, filing a report under SD ref: 19/30/05/2023, seeking necessary protection.

Unfortunately, despite his proactive approach, he has yet to receive any substantive response or assistance from law enforcement authorities, leaving him exposed and without adequate support.

The passage of the Anti Homosexuality Act has exacerbated existing concerns regarding the safety and rights of activists advocating for LGBTQ+ rights in Uganda.

By criminalizing homosexuality and impeding support for gay individuals, the law has created an environment of fear and intimidation. Notably, the act also threatens imprisonment for activists who voice their support for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

Wamala's experiences reflect the broader challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Uganda, including societal discrimination and social stigma.

Progress towards a more inclusive society is hindered by these barriers. Nonetheless, Wamala's unwavering commitment to the pursuit of equality and justice remains steadfast, even in the face of mounting risks.
